The History of Valentine's DayThe history of Valentine's Day is shrouded in mystery; however, it is truthfully known that the holiday was adopted by Pope Gelasius I around the year 496 as a recasting of an old Roman festival that centered around the celebration of fertility. No one knows for sure which St. Valentine the Pope intended to honor, but amazingly all three possible St. Valentines were martyred on February 14.The tradition of giving greeting cards on Valentine's Day began in England in the 18th century, but did not become popular in the United States until the 1850s. Today, Valentine's Day has been dropped by the Catholic Church because the historical origins of the holiday are questionable. However, people in the U.S. still celebrate it as a day of showing affection and appreciation for loved ones. Men continue to be the primary spenders when it comes to splurging on gifts for Valentine's Day Consumers aged 25-34 plan on spending $164.32 this year (2007)on Valentine's day (nrf.com) Americans consumed 24.6 pounds of candy per year in 2003, much of which was consumed on Valentine's Day.
