    The History of Administrative Professionals Week

    Administrative Professionals Day is always celebrated the last full week in April. Some company's observe on the Wednesday of Administrative Professionals Week. The event originated in 1952 as National Secretaries Week and Professional Secretaries Day. The names of the holidays were switched to the current designation in 2000 to reflect the several different administrative professions and their expanding responsibilities.


    The theme for Administrative Professionals Week 2007 was Shaping the Future. In 2006, the theme was "Creating Excellence."

    In polls, the majority of administrative professionals prefer to be recognized for their professional role and opportunities for learning and career growth. Why not ask your administrative staff how they would like to celebrate Administrative Professionals Week? Here are some ideas to get the discussion going:

    • Hold a special event for administrative staff with a presentation or seminar that helps them with their career development.

    • Hold a company-wide luncheon or dinner in their honor and have the president or CEO as the speaker

    • Support membership in appropriate networking and professional associations.

    • Give appropriate business-related gifts like a monetary bonus for exemplary performance, a professional certification course of their choice, a desktop nameplate or engraved pen and pencil set, or a computer hardware/software upgrade
