The History of Bring Your Kid to Work Day

Bring Your Kid to Work Day started in 2003 and has involved millions of individuals and families. Children get an understanding of what 'mommy and daddy' do everyday to provide a home for them and children get the experience of seeing first hand what their parents do everyday. They also have the opportunity to discover what they might like to do when they enter the workforce.

Bring Your Kid to Work Day is once a year, but parents and teachers should encourage conversation and experiences with children throughout the year.

Bring Your Kid to Work Day Activity Ideas.

    Have the kids
    • interview their parent about what they like about their job. Have each kid share what they learned to the group.
    • draw a floor plan of their parent's office space or floor they work on and then have them re-design the space to better accomodate people's needs.
    • create their own company with a company name, tagline, business cards, product/service price sheet, advertisements etc. and then each child shares with the group. Have them create a market research survey that will help them better plan their 'make believe' company's product / service.
    • write about their skills and talents and then have them communicate this at a 'networking party' with the other kids and parents. Have them follow up the networking party by sending thank you eCards to everyone they met.
    Have the parents
    • describe each task they are doing and have the child participate in the task
    • give money to the child and let them pay for lunch or snacks
    • talk about major events in their life that lead them to their career decision
