The History of Earth Day

In the late 1960s and 1970s, there was a growing concern about pollution and the environment. Earth Day first began in 1970 as a day to bring awareness to ecology and to the protection of the environment around the world. On April 22, over one hundred countries will celebrate Earth Day and many people participate in helping to save our world not just on Earth Day but every day of the year.

Since June 2001, the United States has partnered with 20 nations and the European Union on resolving environmental issues. On Earth Day 2007, US Federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture, and the State Department, participated in park cleanups, tree plantings, and environmental education events.

The United Nations celebrates Earth Day on the vernal equinox but many countries celebrate on April 22.

How can you make a difference?
  • Create space for a small garden or put plants on your deck or patio. Put potato and carrot peels, eggshells, and ground coffee into a compost heap.
  • When you are not using something, turn it off. Turn off lights, computers, televisions, or anything that uses energy. Many items, even DVD players, use energy when turned off, so unplugging those items is the only way to truly conserve.
  • Shut off the water when you brush your teeth.
  • Walk, use a bike, or use public transportation instead of using a car
  • Put water saving faucets in showers and sinks. They release a smaller amount of water and you probably won't notice the difference.
  • Hang clothes on a line outside instead of using a clothes dryer
