It was originally called "Old Glory" and "Stars and Stripes". It is rumored that Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag after George Washington and members from the Continental Congress visited her with their sketch. The American flag has been through several revisions since its conception, mainly altering whenever a new state entered the union and a new star had to be added. The flag's last change was in 1960 after Hawaii became the 50th state.
The White House is one of 8 locations where the American flag can legally be displayed 24 hours. However, many places fly the flag all the time as a patriotic gesture.

The thirteen alternating red and white stripes represent the original thirteen colonies. Each white star represents a state of the union. Red signifies hardiness and valour, white, purity, and blue, justice and perseverance.
