The History of Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month, also called National Hispanic Awareness Month, begins on September 15 each year. It is a time to celebrate the culture, traditions,
and achievements of Hispanics – Spanish-speaking people (regardless of race)
who reside in the United States. The month-long celebration began as a week-long
observance in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson to honor our country's Hispanic
heritage. In 1988 the celebration was expanded to a month.
September 15 was chosen as the day of the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month because it is the anniversary of the independence of several Latin American nations – Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Mexico and Chile achieved independence only days later on September 16 and September 18 respectively.
Hispanics constitute approximately 13.7% of the U.S. population with about 40 million residents.
29 million U.S. residents speak Spanish at home. Half of those people are bilingual with English.
