The History of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a time to celebrate the life and message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as the other heroes of the Civil Rights Movement. King was made famous for his unwavering determination to give, not only African Americans, but members of all races, cultures, and religions equal rights. 15 years after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968, a bill was passed that declared the third Monday in January to be Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did not just preach for equal rights for African Americans. He had a dream that one day all of the world's people could coexist with equal rights and in peace. Here is the final part of King’s famous "I have a dream..." speech

"And when this happens, when we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every tenement and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old spiritual, "Free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at last."

Schools, federal offices, the post office, and banks all close for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

One of the reasons why it took so long for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to pass through Congress was an argument over what day it should land. King's birthday is January 15, which many thought was too close to other winter holidays. A compromise was finally made to place the holiday on the third Monday in January.
