    The History of National Volunteer Week

    National Volunteer Week was first established by President Nixon in 1974. The purpose was to recognize the millions of dedicated Americans who volunteer during the year in an effort to make the world a better place. Every year the current President and several other political figures issue proclamations thanking the efforts of volunteers.

    Ideas for volunteerism during National Volunteer Week According to data from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 28.8% of Americans volunteered in some form in 2005. The segment of the population who volunteered the most was the 35-44 year age group, with 34.5% volunteering.
