    The History of President's Day

President's Day technically first became a national holiday in 1971 thanks to President Richard Nixon. Celebrated on the third Monday in February every year, President's Day was originally called Washington's Birthday (who was actually born on the 22nd). However, Nixon wanted the holiday to serve as a remembrance of the lives and contributions of all United States presidents. Abraham Lincoln, for example, was also born in February (on the 12th), but his birthday was not recognized as a national holiday. Franklin D. Roosevelt, famous for pulling the U.S. out of the Great Depression, leading the Allies to eventual victory in World War II, and laying the foundation of the United Nations, also does not have a national holiday.

Thus, the third Monday in February has been designated President's Day to commemorate all U.S. presidents equally.

Abraham Lincoln was the tallest President at 6'4''. He was also the first President to be assassinated. His son, Robert, was present when President Garfield was shot in 1881 and President McKinley was assassinated in 1901.

George Washington was the only President to be elected unanimously by the electoral college. He never shook hands with visitors - he bowed to them instead, believing shaking hands was below what a President should do.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to Presidency four terms in a row, winning the electoral vote by enormous margins each time. After his final term, it was decided that a President could only serve a total of two terms.
