The History of St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick was born into a Christian family in the year 385. At an early age, he was captured by Irish marauders and forced to work as a herder. He escaped when he was 22 in response to a voice. Eventually he returned to his family, when he saw another vision that told him to Christianize Ireland. Patrick studied to become a missionary, and eventually left for Ireland with a band of followers. After leading several successful converts, Patrick gained the respect of the high king, and expanded his mission. By the time of his death, St. Patrick had successfully converted nearly every Irish territory to Christianity, established the traditional set of Irish law, and introduced the Roman alphabet to the Irish people. Because St. Patrick seemed to always prevail, he was said to be very lucky – one of the reasons why people today associate the Irish with good luck.

There are about 37 million people in the United States of Irish descent, while only about 3 million Irish people in the actual country of Ireland. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in the United States as a commemoration of all things Irish. Surprisingly, Ireland is only beginning to catch up to America in the festivities.

St. Patrick's Day is known as St. Patrick's Festival in Ireland. In 1995 the Irish government decided to turn St. Patrick's Day into a true Irish holiday, which was celebrated as a 3-day festival. In 2000 the government extended it to a 5-day festival to capitalize on the tourism and money-making opportunities it presented, as well as celebrate the history of the nation.

In 2005, more than 15 million Americans planned to decorate their home or office for St. Patrick's Day and more than 26 million Americans planned to make a special dinner to celebrate the holiday with family or business contacts.
