The History of ThanksgivingThe first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 by settlers from Plymouth Colony to celebrate their harvest after a harsh winter. In traditional English fashion, the colonists invited the local Wampanoag Indians to join them in the feast.Due to the fractured nature and distance between the colonies, the first time all thirteen celebrated Thanksgiving was in October 1777, and President George Washington declared it a holiday in 1789. It was not declared a national holiday until 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln mulled of ways to bring his battered nation together in unity. The U.S. imports almost all of its live turkeys from Canada ($11.4 million between January and July 2004). Canada was also responsible for every single imported cranberry ($3.0 million in 2004). Most sweet potatoes were imported from the Dominican Republic ($1.5 million out of $1.7 million in imports). |
