What is a Wiki anyways?
Over the last few months, I have seen web pages that were described as 'Wiki's.' One day my curiousity got the better of me -- I had to find out what this meant. I searched Google on the name Wiki and came up with a few interesting web sites that explained the concept in layman's terms.
A Wiki is the term that is used for any web page that can be edited by anyone who visits that page. On the few Wiki style pages that I have seen, everything on the page can be edited quickly and easily.
After doing a little more research, I have compiled a list of some of the benefits and drawbacks of using a 'Wiki'-based web page.
Benefits
Anyone can edit the web page no matter their location
It is less time consuming to edit a page directly rather than contacting your tech department or using HTML software
Each page has a simple layout that is easy for anyone to understand and edit
Drawbacks
Since anyone can edit the file, anyone can also delete any of the information on the web page
With so many people editing a site, it can be hard to return back to an appropriate page in case one is damaged
Most 'Wiki' sites allow people to edit pages anonymously, which makes it hard to set terms of use and enforce them
