Networking Event Tips

• Prepare: Practice your 30-second introduction (also known as your elevator speech)
• Don't be Shy: You came to the event to meet people and so did they - go say hi. (There's a good chance they are more nervous than you!)
• Be Engaging: Use a person's name in your conversation with them. It will help you remember their name and it will make them more comfortable.
• Body Language: Don't fidget. Be subtle when you scan the room for others to talk to. Mirror people's mannerisms but not to the point where they recognize it.
• Show Interest: Be attentive and listen to what other's have to say. Make eye contact. What interests do you have in common? When someone gives you a business card - read it.
• Take Notes: On the back of their business card write the event and date and any particulars about your conversation.
• Follow Up: Don't just collect those cards - use the notes you have taken - stay in touch. Send follow-up ecards.

Remember, networking is not about closing the deal - it's about building relationships. When people get to know you, like you, and trust you - they'll either refer or do business with you.
