What's Your Target Market?
If you don't know your target market, the result is unfocused
sales efforts and the creation of products and services that
don't appeal to any one group of people. It's also important to
periodically re-access your target market as your company's products
and services change over time.
It's never too late to refocus your sales efforts and
touch base with your ever-changing customer base. Here are some
reasons why selecting a focused target market is essential, and how CorpNote
can help:
- A narrow focus is key - Many products fail because they are trying
to do something for everyone. It is much more profitable to recognize
the needs of a single group of people and only target that market.
They will then tell their friends how great your product or service
is and hopefully get them to buy from you. Those friends
may not have initially been in your smaller target market but
they need your product and will be encouraged to buy based upon
a recommendation from a friend.
- Proper positioning - Your customer is your most important resource. Send e-cards thanking customers for
their business, and ask them to take a brief survey with questions
such as why they purchased your product over a competitors
product and most importantly whether they would purchase from
you again. By analyzing what
your customers want and why they buy, you can gain a key advantage.
- Think like your customer - Attend
trade shows, expos, and other networking events where you will meet people that are like your customers or in your target
market. Find out what they like and/or dislike about your product or service.
Don't forget to follow-up and
ask for suggestions!
Once you have collected research on your existing
and potential customers, you can target the most
appropriate and profitable market for your business.
