Christmas Eve - Sugar Plums Danced in Their Heads

There is a famous poem called 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' that was written anonymously in 1823. There is a line 'While visions of sugar plums danc'd in their heads' that always amused me. On Christmas eve for many children all over the world, the children are no longer dreaming of sugar plums, they are most likely dreaming of a Christmas filled with video games, iPads and other tech gadgets. But what is a sugar plum and why have I never had one?

I looked up the history of sugar plums and they were a candy in the 1600's that took a very long time to make and were expensive until manufacturing made making the product easier. Sugar plums are made from any combination of dried plums, dates, figs, apricots, and cherries. Sugar plum has also become popular in media such as the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker.
